PRESS RELEASE 23.2.2017 Yokohama
World Photographic Cup (WPC) medals have been announced and digital artist Antti Karppinen from Finland brought home a gold medal in the illustrative category with his picture “Endless”.
The picture “Endless” is based on Roger Penrose’s optical illusion illustration “Penrose steps”, which seem to keep on going downwards infinitely. In Antti´s picture the penrose steps form an endless river with a small angel boy sitting on the riverbank, holding a paper boat. The endless stream takes the small paper boats around and around on an infinite loop.
Originally Antti was planning just to make a picture of his son to have a new print to hang on the living room wall, but the finished image took even himself by surprise. What was supposed to be a sweet family photo ended up being so heartbreakingly touching that he could not bear to see the image on his own wall. He did publish the image in social media, where it drew a lot of comments, even very personal confessions particularly from people who had personal experience about a loss of a child.
Pictures have a formidable power to trigger feelings, and this is probably also the secret behind the success of this image. The heart wrenching theme rendered the picture useless as a family portrait, but inserted a whole new layer of meaning into it.
